For the Chicken Wings:
- 12 chicken wings drumettes and flats work best for this recipe
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil adds depth and a nutty flavor
- Salt and pepper to taste for seasoning
For the Garlic Sauce:
- 6 cloves garlic minced, the heart of this sauce!
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce provides that rich, salty umami flavor
- 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce for sweetness and depth
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar a touch of acidity to balance the flavors
- 1 tablespoon honey adds sweetness to complement the garlic
- 1 teaspoon ginger freshly grated or minced, gives the sauce a lovely warmth
- 1 teaspoon chili flakes optional, for a bit of spice
- 2 tablespoons water to adjust the sauce consistency
Garnish (Optional but Recommended):
- Green onions thinly sliced, for a fresh, crispy finish
- Sesame seeds for a bit of crunch and visual appeal
Step 1: Prepare the Chicken Wings
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) or heat up your air fryer if you’re using one. The goal here is crispy, golden chicken wings!
Season the wings with a pinch of salt and pepper. Then, rub them evenly with 1 tablespoon of sesame oil. This will help them crisp up nicely in the oven or air fryer.
Step 2: Cook the Wings
Bake in the oven for 30-35 minutes or until the wings are golden and crispy. If you're using an air fryer, cook them at 380°F (190°C) for about 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through.
If you prefer fried chicken wings, heat up oil in a deep skillet and fry the wings for 8-10 minutes or until golden brown.
Step 3: Make the Garlic Sauce
While the wings are cooking, it’s time to prepare the garlic sauce. In a small saucepan, heat 1 tablespoon of sesame oil over medium heat.
Add 6 minced garlic cloves and 1 teaspoon of grated ginger. Sauté for 2-3 minutes until fragrant (this is when your kitchen will start smelling amazing!).
Stir in 2 tablespoons of soy sauce, 1 tablespoon of hoisin sauce, 1 tablespoon of rice vinegar, and 1 tablespoon of honey. Let it simmer for 3-4 minutes to thicken and combine the flavors.
If you want a bit of heat, toss in 1 teaspoon of chili flakes and let them infuse into the sauce.
Add 2 tablespoons of water to adjust the consistency to your liking. If the sauce gets too thick, just add a little more water until it’s the perfect texture for drizzling.
Step 4: Coat the Wings
Once your chicken wings are perfectly crispy, remove them from the oven (or fryer).
Toss the wings in the garlic sauce, ensuring each wing is generously coated with that rich, savory goodness.
Step 5: Garnish and Serve
Sprinkle the wings with freshly sliced green onions and a handful of sesame seeds for that final touch of crunch and flavor.
Serve the wings hot and enjoy the beautiful blend of sweet, savory, and garlicky goodness.
