Ingredients

For the Chicken Wings:

  • 12 chicken wings drumettes and flats work best for this recipe
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil adds depth and a nutty flavor
  • Salt and pepper to taste for seasoning

For the Garlic Sauce:

  • 6 cloves garlic minced, the heart of this sauce!
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce provides that rich, salty umami flavor
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce for sweetness and depth
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar a touch of acidity to balance the flavors
  • 1 tablespoon honey adds sweetness to complement the garlic
  • 1 teaspoon ginger freshly grated or minced, gives the sauce a lovely warmth
  • 1 teaspoon chili flakes optional, for a bit of spice
  • 2 tablespoons water to adjust the sauce consistency

Garnish (Optional but Recommended):

  • Green onions thinly sliced, for a fresh, crispy finish
  • Sesame seeds for a bit of crunch and visual appeal

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Chicken Wings

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) or heat up your air fryer if you’re using one. The goal here is crispy, golden chicken wings!
  • Season the wings with a pinch of salt and pepper. Then, rub them evenly with 1 tablespoon of sesame oil. This will help them crisp up nicely in the oven or air fryer.

Step 2: Cook the Wings

  • Bake in the oven for 30-35 minutes or until the wings are golden and crispy. If you're using an air fryer, cook them at 380°F (190°C) for about 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  • If you prefer fried chicken wings, heat up oil in a deep skillet and fry the wings for 8-10 minutes or until golden brown.

Step 3: Make the Garlic Sauce

  • While the wings are cooking, it’s time to prepare the garlic sauce. In a small saucepan, heat 1 tablespoon of sesame oil over medium heat.
  • Add 6 minced garlic cloves and 1 teaspoon of grated ginger. Sauté for 2-3 minutes until fragrant (this is when your kitchen will start smelling amazing!).
  • Stir in 2 tablespoons of soy sauce, 1 tablespoon of hoisin sauce, 1 tablespoon of rice vinegar, and 1 tablespoon of honey. Let it simmer for 3-4 minutes to thicken and combine the flavors.
  • If you want a bit of heat, toss in 1 teaspoon of chili flakes and let them infuse into the sauce.
  • Add 2 tablespoons of water to adjust the consistency to your liking. If the sauce gets too thick, just add a little more water until it’s the perfect texture for drizzling.

Step 4: Coat the Wings

  • Once your chicken wings are perfectly crispy, remove them from the oven (or fryer).
  • Toss the wings in the garlic sauce, ensuring each wing is generously coated with that rich, savory goodness.

Step 5: Garnish and Serve

  • Sprinkle the wings with freshly sliced green onions and a handful of sesame seeds for that final touch of crunch and flavor.
  • Serve the wings hot and enjoy the beautiful blend of sweet, savory, and garlicky goodness.

Pro Tip:

  • For extra crispy wings, give them a quick broil in the oven for the last 2-3 minutes. This will help the wings get even crunchier while maintaining their juicy interior.
